FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you write rupees in words for an Indian invoice?+

Indian invoices use the lakh/crore number system. ₹1,50,000 is written as "Rupees One Lakh Fifty Thousand Only." ₹10,00,000 is "Rupees Ten Lakh Only." The word "Only" is added at the end to prevent tampering. Our converter handles all this automatically.

Is writing the amount in words mandatory on a GST invoice?+

Yes. Rule 46 of CGST Rules requires the total amount payable to be written in words on a tax invoice. It is also required on cheques, demand drafts, and legal documents. Our invoice builder adds it automatically on every PDF.

How do you write lakhs and crores in words?+

1 Lakh = 1,00,000. 1 Crore = 1,00,00,000. Example: ₹2,35,17,500 = "Rupees Two Crore Thirty-Five Lakh Seventeen Thousand Five Hundred Only." The Indian numbering system groups digits as: ones, thousands, lakhs, crores — not millions/billions.

How are paise written in words?+

Paise are the sub-unit of the rupee (100 paise = 1 rupee). ₹1,250.75 is written as "Rupees One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty and Seventy-Five Paise Only." Our converter includes paise when the amount has decimals.

What is the difference between the Indian and international number system for large amounts?+

The international system uses thousands, millions, billions. The Indian system uses thousands, lakhs, crores. 1 million = 10 lakh. 1 billion = 100 crore. Indian invoices, cheques, and legal documents always use the Indian system (lakh/crore).

Can I use this converter for cheques?+

Yes. The format "Rupees [Amount] Only" is the standard for cheques, demand drafts, and bank instruments in India. Use the output directly — just replace the "/" separator between rupees and paise if your bank requires a different format.
